Every class at Greenhills creates their own mascot, motto, and mission.
Our mascot(s): We have two stuffed animals named Spike (the monkey) and Spot (the giraffe). During the year, each of the kids gets a chance to take Spike or Spot home for a while and then write in a class book about what they did during that time. Tanya doesn't have a time limit on how long the kids have them at home, which is really nice because it gives the parents time to develop/print photos if they so desire. When the animals return to school, the child that took it home gets a chance to share their pictures and their journal about what they did with Spotty or Spike.
Our motto:
"1K saves the day by helping our friends in every way!"
Our mission (song):
1, 2, 3, clap! We are brainy, can't you see?
4, 5, 6, clap! We are learning all new tricks!
7, 8, 9, clap! We are all mighty fine!
They also made up motions to go with the song. My class is performing our song on Monday at the school assembly. They will be great!
In addition to building team spirit in each classroom, every student in the school is placed into one of four teams. The teams are named after four early settlers of this area: Meruka, Poulter, Yandell, and Leith. (It reminds me a lot of the teams from Harry Potter!) Tanya is a part of the Welfare Team - a group of teachers/staff who are in charge of planning events that encourage the wellbeing of students and staff. Every term, there is a House/Fun Day where students are divided into their teams and they earn points for their team by playing games. Each team has a different colour and the kids get to dress out of uniform and wear their team colour. This is a great way for children across all grades to work together for a common goal. The kids are put into teams during the prep year and they remain with the same team throughout their entire time at Greenhills. You can imagine that by the time a child is in Grade 5/6, they feel a sense of ownership over their team that they can pass on to the younger students.

Can you upload a video of the kids singing the class song so we can watch it?
